  • Deliverable

    A deliverable is an output that has to be produced at a defined point in the project and submitted to the Commission: a report, a dataset, a prototype, a data management plan. It is numbered as “work package number.deliverable number” and has a type and a dissemination level.

  • Dissemination & Exploitation

    Dissemination is making the results of a project public so that others can use them; exploitation is putting those results to work to create value, including commercial value. In Horizon Europe this is not a wish but a contractual obligation, with its own plan due as a deliverable in the first six months.

  • GDPR compliance

    The GDPR is the EU's general regulation on personal data protection, and it applies to a project regardless of the participant's country whenever data on people in the EU is processed. In a proposal it forms a separate category of ethics issues, and undeclared data processing leads to requirements before the grant is signed.

  • Milestone

    A milestone is a control point in a project that makes it possible to check progress: the completion of a key stage after which the next one can begin, or the moment a decision is taken. Unlike a deliverable, a milestone is not submitted to the Commission but verified, and the means of verification must be stated in the proposal.

  • Open Access / Open Science

    Open science is the practice of making research results accessible: open access publications, FAIR data, transparent methodology. In Horizon Europe open access to publications is mandatory, and the quality of open science practices is assessed directly under the Excellence criterion.

  • Project Officer (PO)

    A Project Officer is a member of staff at the Commission or an executive agency assigned to your project after selection. They run the grant agreement preparation, accept reports and hold project reviews, and all communication with them has to be in writing through the portal.

  • Subgrant / Subaward

    A subaward is the part of a US federal grant that the main recipient passes on to another organisation so that it carries out a share of the project. The key point is telling a subrecipient from a contractor correctly, because that decides whose monitoring and audit obligations arise.
