ERC Starting Grant 2027: EUR 1.5M for PhD
594.1 million euro and 373 grants. That is what the European Research Council (ERC) set aside for the ERC Starting Grant 2027 call, which opened on 22 July 2026. The deadline falls on 14 October 2026. One researcher, up to 1,500,000 euro over 5 years, and no preset topics.

EIC STEP Scale Up Defence: up to €30M for defence firms
On 1 July 2026, the European Innovation Council (EIC) opened the EIC STEP Scale Up Defence call. Because the rules name Ukraine directly, Ukrainian companies can apply on equal terms with firms from EU countries. The investment size runs from €10 to €30 million in company equity.

EDIP USI: €300M EU grants for Ukraine’s defence industry
The European Commission has opened calls under EDIP Ukraine Support Instrument (USI) – €300 million to rebuild, modernise and scale up Ukraine’s defence industrial base. The first call opens in June 2026, with a submission deadline of 13 October 2026.
